Back to Basics Tutorials, OSX Edition 1 of 3, Installing DS4

This guide is a basic overview with screenshots of how to install DS4 successfully, using primarily the default options.  Each choice will be explained and shown clearly with screenshots.

Like any other application installer, to get started, just double click the installer package in Finder.  You will be presented with the following screen.  Just click the [Next] button as there are no options to be aware of yet.

You will immediately be prompted to accept the license agreement.  Please read the agreement, change the (Radial Button) next to "I Accept the Agreement" and click the [Next] button.

Next is the End User License Agreement, this agreement covers the content that ships with DAZ Studio 4 and should be much the same as the content agreement with product installers.  Again, select the (Radial Button) next to "I accept the agreement" only after reading the EULA.  Then click the [Next] button.

Next we're asked to read and understand what the installer is going to do related to the DAZ Content Management Service (CMS).  The DAZ CMS is a database server that allows DAZ Studio to process and handle special file data called "metadata."  This metadata lets DAZ Studio do things like know which hair fits which figure and what textures go with that hair.  It also enables the DS2/DS3 "Categories" database view.  Note that below I have checked the box next to 'Customize "DAZ Content Management Service" Installation.  I have done this for a variety of reasons which I will explain shortly.

The next dialog box guides us to where the application wants to install.  For most users the default locations are fine.  However, you should pay close attention to both values.  The Content Directory choice is quite critical and one should always know where this is as you will need it to install content later.   You can override these values is you like, but it shouldn't be necessary.  Possibly reasons you might change them, however, include limited space on your O/S drive or the desire to move a runtime directory between multiple computers using an external drive.

The default paths are shown here.  (Note that for installing the 64bit version of DS4, the "DAZStudio4" will be "DAZStudio4 64bit".

Once you're comfortable with where everything is going, it is now time for the installer to get to work.  Click the Next button.

Last chance to abort the install, if you're still ready, click [Next].  Otherwise click [Back] to go review / change your choices or [Cancel] to abort.

The following screen will appear with a progress bar during the install, the progress bar should slowly fill as things move forward.

When it comes time to install the DAZ Content Management Services you will be prompted for username/password that has sudo (Admin) privaledges.

After we have confirmed our admin status and because we checked the "Customize DAZ Content Management Service Install" we'll be presented with a new dialog box like the one below.  Note that it's possible for this screen to end up behind the Setup screen so a quick Command+Tab hit on the keyboard might be required if the install appears to be pauses, but you don't see this screen.  Click [Next] to start the install of the DAZ CMS.

Now, even though we don't need to change anything in the install, I selected the Customize option because it is important to understand where the program is placing files on your computer.  Note the information below (again, these are defaults).  You can override the defaults if you prefer but there isn't really a reason to do so.  Please click the [Next] button when you are comfortable.

Once the CMS has finished installing, click the [Finish] button to resume the main install.

Next the installer will install the DS4 Default content (which includes Genesis).  This should resume automatically and there's nothing to click here.

That's pretty much it!  Now we just need to click [Next] ... And click [Finish] and we're done!  You can skip the welcome page if you'd like by unchecking the appropriate box on the screen below.
